A pocket-sized diagnostic reader for rapid lateral-flow assays, designed for emerging-market clinics.

Challenge

Replace a $1,200 benchtop reader with a sub-$180 handheld unit able to run unattended for an 8-hour clinic shift on a single charge.

Approach

  • · Optical bench redesigned around a custom 4-LED + photodiode array on a 4-layer rigid-flex PCB.
  • · Anodized aluminum enclosure machined for thermal stability and IP54 sealing.
  • · Bluetooth LE pairing with a companion app for results sync and audit trail.

  • · Energy-harvesting power stage combining a 1.2 W solar cell and LiFePO4 cell for −20°C operation.
  • · Firmware OTA over LoRaWAN with delta updates under 12 KB.
